Online Gambling Arrest

The Bodog.com Marketing Conference was canceled after David Carruthers, CEO of Betonsports.com was arrested in Dallas on charges of racketeering, conspiracy and an illegal online gambling enterprise during a layover to Costa Rica, where his company is based. This is a rather large development in the online gaming industry and indicates tough times ahead for that industry.

Betonsports.com has ceased all transactions for an unknown time period. Sports betting was outlawed by the Federal Wire Act of 1961. Most online gambling companies are based overseas to avoid U.S. laws. The indictment appears based on the company having started in New York, moving to Florida and then moving overseas to Costa Rica.
